Region base guide / Saxon Switzerland
Where to base in Saxon Switzerland
Choose a base for Elbe sandstone hiking without a car: Bad Schandau, Pirna, Kurort Rathen or Königstein, with S1 access, guest-card limits and season checks.
Quick answer
For three or four nights of hiking without a car, base in Bad Schandau: the national park station, the Kirnitzschtal tram and the Schrammsteine lift all start there, and your host issues the transport guest card. Choose Pirna if you want a proper town with every S1 train and the Bastei buses but will ride out each morning. Sleep in Kurort Rathen or Königstein for the Bastei or the fortress on your doorstep, knowing Rathen's ferry is a separate cash ticket. Stay in Dresden only when city evenings matter more than the first and last hour of each hiking day.
How long? Three nights for the Bastei, the fortress and one Schrammsteine day; four if you add the Kirnitzschtal or a Dresden museum day.
Where to stay
Choose the base by the days it must carry.
Bad Schandau
Choose it for: Hiking without a car: the national park station, the Kirnitzschtal tram, the Ostrau lift for the Schrammsteine and the transport guest card from your host
Getting there: S1 and EuroCity trains stop at the Nationalparkbahnhof on the opposite bank; the F5 ferry crosses to the town every 30 minutes from early morning until the evening.
Check before booking: The station is across the Elbe. Check the ferry's timetable for your arrival time, especially outside 28 March to 1 November when the late crossings stop, and ask the hotel how luggage gets from the Elbkai to the door.
Pirna
Choose it for: A proper town at the edge of the rocks with every S1 train, the Bastei bus 237 and a guest card that covers the valley
Getting there: Pirna station on the S1; all Dresden–Bad Schandau trains call here and the Bastei buses leave from the town.
Check before booking: You are beside the sandstone, not inside it: every hike begins with a train or bus ride. Check the walk from the station to your hotel and the first bus to the Bastei for your date.
Kurort Rathen
Choose it for: Sleeping beneath the Bastei and walking up before the day visitors arrive
Getting there: S1 to Kurort Rathen station on the opposite bank, then about five minutes to the historic cable ferry, which runs year-round and charges its own fare.
Check before booking: The ferry takes no VVO ticket, no Deutschlandticket and no guest card, Rathen's transport guest card is only planned from April 2027, and the Amselgrund path from Rathen toward the Schwedenlöcher remains closed after the July 2026 storm. Read the national park's Rathen update before booking.
Königstein
Choose it for: The fortress on your doorstep, a guest-card host and a quieter base between Rathen and Bad Schandau
Getting there: S1 to Königstein station, then about 25 minutes on foot to the fortress or the Festungsexpress shuttle; a panoramic lift links the valley with the plateau.
Check before booking: Königstein is a small town: evenings are quiet and the fortress closes at 17:00 in winter. Check the climb or shuttle to the fortress and the walk from the station to your hotel.
The Saxon Switzerland tourism region recorded 1.733 million overnight stays in 2025 in establishments with nine or ten beds or more, according to the regional tourism association's table of state statistics. That is accommodation demand for the whole region, not Dresden, and not a forecast of our bookings.
Booking decision
Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.
Season matters more than events here. The Kirnitzschtal tram runs its half-hourly summer timetable from 28 March to 1 November 2026 and switches to a winter timetable from 2 November; Königstein Fortress moves to 09:00–17:00 and a lower winter price from 2 November 2026 to 19 March 2027. Rail works also bite: the S1 is replaced by buses between Pirna and Dresden Hauptbahnhof on the night of 26–27 October 2026, and bridge works affect the Schöna–Bad Schandau section from 3 November to 1 December 2026. Check the VVO timetable-change page for your dates before fixing a base.
Check current S1 timetable changes (VVO)
Verify the season and the dates:
- National park: current closures around Rathen after the July 2026 storm
- Kirnitzschtalbahn: 2026 summer and winter timetables and fares
- Königstein Fortress: opening hours and prices 2026–27
- Bastei: access, shuttle season and bus lines
Before choosing a room:
- Pick the base by the bank of the Elbe your hotel is on: Bad Schandau and Rathen stations are across the river from the villages, so check the ferry times for your arrival and the last evening crossing.
- Confirm the Gästekarte mobil with the host before booking if transport is part of the budget; Kurort Rathen does not issue it before April 2027 and Dresden hotels never do.
- Compare the same dates against the season switch on 1–2 November 2026: the tram, the fortress and the late ferries all change then, and the S1 has bus replacement around Bad Schandau from 3 November to 1 December 2026.
Arrival
Arrive, then move between the bases.
By rail: Dresden is the gateway. The national park says the S1 runs every 30 minutes from Dresden along the Elbe through Pirna, Kurort Rathen and Königstein to Bad Schandau, which is also a EuroCity stop with direct trains from Berlin, Leipzig and Prague. Per-station journey times are not published on one official page, so check the VVO journey planner for your base.
By air: Dresden Airport's station is under the terminal. The S2 runs every 30 minutes, 21 minutes to Dresden Hauptbahnhof and 14 minutes to Dresden-Neustadt, where you change to the S1.
By car: from Dresden take the A17 toward Prague to the Pirna exit, then the B172 toward Bad Schandau. The national park warns that hiking car parks fill quickly, especially at weekends, recommends the S-Bahn and hiking buses, and bans overnight parking on its car parks.
Without a car
Choose Bad Schandau, Pirna or Königstein so your host issues the Gästekarte mobil, then let the S1, the RVSOE buses, the Kirnitzschtal tram and most ferries carry the week. Budget separately for the Rathen ferry, the Ostrau lift and any trip into Dresden, which is outside the card's zones.
With a car
A car buys early starts but not a parking space: the national park says hiking car parks fill fast and some charge. Park once at your base and use the S1 for the Bastei and Königstein days; keep the car for the Kirnitzschtal or the Czech side, and avoid peak weekends at the trailheads.
A base-by-base plan
Days that fit the base you chose.
Day one: Bastei
Take the S1 to Kurort Rathen, cross by ferry and walk the reopened Basteiweg up to the bridge and the viewpoint; the Bastei is free and open at any hour. Return the same way while the Amselgrund toward the Schwedenlöcher stays closed.
Day two: Schrammsteine
From Bad Schandau's Elbkai take the historic Ostrau lift and follow the marked route over Ostrau toward the Hohe Liebe; the tourism board rates the twelve-kilometre loop as medium, around four hours. Stay on marked paths and keep dogs on a lead inside the park.
Day three: Königstein Fortress
S1 to Königstein, then the 25-minute climb or the Festungsexpress. Until 1 November 2026 the fortress is open 09:00–18:00; from 2 November 2026 to 19 March 2027 it closes at 17:00, with Christmas-market hours on Advent weekends and closures on 24 December and 28 January.
Day four: Kirnitzschtal
Ride the Kirnitzschtalbahn, the park's tram line since 1898, to the Lichtenhainer Wasserfall and walk toward the Kuhstall. It runs half-hourly until 1 November 2026; the winter timetable from 2 November is thinner, so check the last return.
Local ticket
The Gästekarte mobil covers the valley, not the ferry at Rathen.
Hosts in Bad Schandau, Pirna, Königstein, Hohnstein, Sebnitz, Stadt Wehlen and the other listed municipalities issue the Gästekarte Sächsische Schweiz mobil on arrival. It is valid from arrival to departure day on buses, the S-Bahn, regional trains, most ferries and the Kirnitzschtalbahn within VVO zones 70 to 73.
It excludes the Rathen ferry, the Bad Schandau–Ostrau lift, the Elbe passenger boats and private buses, and a trip to Dresden needs a connecting ticket. Kurort Rathen plans to join the transport card from April 2027; until then its guests receive the card without transport.
Common mistake
What to avoid.
Avoid booking Kurort Rathen for a car-free week on the assumption that the guest card or the Deutschlandticket covers the ferry under the Bastei: they do not, and the transport card does not reach Rathen before April 2027. Avoid treating Dresden as a hiking base in November, when the valley's tram, ferries and lift run shorter hours and the S1 has works.
