City stay guide / Berlin

Where to stay in Berlin

Choose a Berlin hotel area for three nights: Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg or Charlottenburg, with BER arrival, fare zones, museum closures and fair dates.

Quick answer

For a first three nights choose Mitte: Museum Island, the Reichstag dome and the Wall Memorial are on foot or one stop away, and the FEX from the airport delivers you to the Hauptbahnhof or Potsdamer Platz. Choose Prenzlauer Berg for cafés, squares and families who want quiet nights with the centre a short ride away. Choose Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain for nightlife, the East Side Gallery and an Ostkreuz arrival by regional train. Choose Charlottenburg for the Messe, the Ku'damm and the palace market, accepting that the east is a train ride away.

How long? Three nights for Museum Island, one history day and one neighbourhood; four for Potsdam or a second museum day.

Where to stay

Choose the base by the day it must simplify.

Mitte

Choose it for: A first visit: Museum Island, the Reichstag dome, the Wall Memorial at Nordbahnhof and the fastest airport link to the Hauptbahnhof or Potsdamer Platz

Check before booking: The most tourist-heavy quarter, and the Pergamonmuseum's headline rooms stay closed until 4 June 2027. The Hauptbahnhof lies in Moabit on the borough's western edge, so check the walk from the station to the hotel.

Prenzlauer Berg

Choose it for: Cafés, Wilhelminian streets and quiet nights for families around Kollwitzplatz, Helmholtzplatz and the Mauerpark

Check before booking: No major museum or fair on the doorstep, and the squares turn lively at night. The FEX does not serve it, so arrival means a change at the Hauptbahnhof or the S85 toward Pankow; check the nearest U- or S-Bahn stop to the hotel.

Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain

Choose it for: Nightlife, the East Side Gallery and multicultural streets around Bergmannkiez and Boxhagener Platz, with hourly regional trains from the airport to Ostkreuz

Check before booking: Friedrichshain is rough around the edges by the city's own description and both districts are a ride from Museum Island. Check noise on the exact street and the night U-Bahn, which runs all night only at weekends.

Charlottenburg / City West

Choose it for: The Messe for ITB and IFA, Ku'damm shopping, Zoologischer Garten station and the Charlottenburg Palace Christmas market

Check before booking: Museum Island, the Reichstag and the eastern nightlife are a train ride away and the FEX does not come west. Rates track fair weeks, so compare the same dates in Mitte.

The Berlin-Brandenburg statistics office counted 29.4 million overnight stays from 12.4 million guests in Berlin in 2025, down 3.8 and 2.7 percent on 2024, in establishments with at least ten beds; about 41 percent of nights came from abroad. That is city demand, not the metropolitan region and not a forecast of our bookings.

Booking decision

Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.

Fairs and festivals set Berlin's hotel prices. ITB runs from 16 to 18 March 2027 and IFA from 3 to 7 September 2027 at the Messe in Charlottenburg; the Generali Berlin Marathon is on 26 September 2027. Christmas markets open on 23 November 2026, the Gendarmenmarkt market to 31 December and the Charlottenburg Palace market to 27 December. Museum planning changes in 2027: the Pergamonmuseum's north wing and central building reopen on 4 June 2027 with the Pergamon Altar, and the Neues Museum closes for maintenance from 15 to 17 March 2027. The Berlinale's 2027 dates could not be verified at review.

Verify the event itself:

Before choosing a room:

  • Lay your dates over ITB (16 to 18 March 2027), IFA (3 to 7 September 2027) and the Marathon (26 September 2027) before comparing quarters; fair weeks lift Charlottenburg first and the rest of the city after.
  • Match the arrival: FEX to the Hauptbahnhof or Potsdamer Platz for Mitte, RB24 or RB32 to Ostkreuz for the east, and a change for Prenzlauer Berg and Charlottenburg. Buy ABC, not AB, for the airport leg.
  • Check the nearest station and the night service to the exact address; district names cover large areas and the U-Bahn runs all night only at weekends.

Arrival

Make the first and last travel day easy.

By air: BER's station is under Terminal 1 and lies in fare zone C, so every trip to the centre needs an ABC ticket (5 euros single, 12.90 for 24 hours) stamped before boarding. The FEX Airport Express reaches Potsdamer Platz in about 19 minutes and the Hauptbahnhof in about 23, every 15 minutes; until December 2026 the FEX and RE20 together run four times an hour. The S9 and S85 serve the airport about every 10 minutes combined, and the RB24 and RB32 run hourly to Ostkreuz for the east.

By rail: the Hauptbahnhof is the long-distance hub on Mitte's western edge; Potsdamer Platz and Südkreuz also see FEX or RE20 trains. Potsdam's Hauptbahnhof is about 30 minutes away by RE1 or S7 and sits in zone C like the airport.

Getting around: an AB 24-hour ticket costs 11.20 euros; the Berlin WelcomeCard starts at 28.50 euros for 48 hours to six days with transport and discounts, and the Museum Pass Berlin (from 32 euros) covers more than 30 museums on three consecutive days. On weekdays most U-Bahn lines run from about 04:00 to 01:00 with night buses between; at weekends the U-Bahn runs around the clock.

Two-day plan

A visit that fits the hotel decision.

Day one: Museum Island

Neues Museum (Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00, closed Mondays and from 15 to 17 March 2027) and the James-Simon-Galerie; the Pergamonmuseum's Panorama across the canal stays open while the museum itself reopens on 4 June 2027. The Museum Pass or the WelcomeCard Museum Island variant covers the permanent collections.

Day two: the divided city

Register in advance for the Reichstag dome (free, photo ID, admission every quarter hour, closed from 19 to 30 October 2026 and on 24 December), then tram M10 or the S-Bahn to the Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße, whose outdoor exhibition opens daily 08:00–22:00 and whose centres open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–18:00.

Day three: a neighbourhood

Choose Prenzlauer Berg's squares and the Mauerpark, Kreuzberg's Bergmannkiez, or Friedrichshain's East Side Gallery and Boxhagener Platz; in Advent add the Gendarmenmarkt market (23 November to 31 December 2026) or the Charlottenburg Palace market (to 27 December).

Day four option: Potsdam

RE1 or S7 to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof in about 30 minutes on an ABC ticket; Sanssouci is closed on Mondays, visits are bound to fixed admission times, and the sanssouci+ ticket (22 euros) covers all Potsdam palaces for a day.

V

Common mistake

What to avoid.

Avoid arriving at BER with an AB ticket or an AB WelcomeCard: the airport is in zone C and unstamped or wrong-zone tickets carry a 60-euro fine. Avoid planning the trip around the Pergamonmuseum before 4 June 2027, when its north wing and the altar return.
