City stay guide / Hamburg
Where to stay in Hamburg
Choose a Hamburg hotel area: Altstadt and Neustadt, HafenCity, St. Pauli or the Hauptbahnhof, with event dates, the hvv network and a Lübeck day weighed.
Quick answer
For a first two or three nights stay in the Neustadt or Altstadt between the Rathaus and the Binnenalster: the harbour, the Speicherstadt and the Christmas market are on foot and every S- and U-Bahn line passes through. Choose HafenCity for the Elbphilharmonie, the Speicherstadt and new hotels at the price of quiet evenings. Choose St. Pauli or the Sternschanze for nightlife, the DOM funfair and the Reeperbahn Festival. Stay beside the Hauptbahnhof for early ICE departures, the airport S1 and the Lübeck train, choosing the Lange Reihe side of St. Georg.
How long? Two nights for the harbour, the Speicherstadt and one museum; three to add a Lübeck day or a Sunday Fischmarkt.
Where to stay
Choose the base by the day it must simplify.
Neustadt and Altstadt
Choose it for: A first visit on foot: Rathaus, Binnenalster, Jungfernstieg shopping and the Rathausmarkt Christmas market, with every rapid-transit line within reach
Check before booking: The most hotel-dense and highest-rate quarter, quiet once the shops close. Check how the hotel's exact street sits between Jungfernstieg, Rathaus and the Hauptbahnhof before paying for the address.
HafenCity and Speicherstadt
Choose it for: The Elbphilharmonie Plaza, Miniatur Wunderland and the UNESCO Speicherstadt on the doorstep, in the city's newest hotel stock
Check before booking: Evenings are quiet outside the restaurant clusters and distances across the new district are long and windy. The Speicherstadt itself has few hotels, so searches spill into HafenCity and the Altstadt.
St. Pauli and Sternschanze
Choose it for: Nightlife, the Reeperbahn Festival, the DOM funfair on the Heiligengeistfeld, Sunday's Fischmarkt on foot and the trade-fair halls
Check before booking: Noise and late-night street life around the Reeperbahn, and rates that spike during the DOM, the festival and major fairs. Choose the Sternschanze side for a quieter café quarter.
Hauptbahnhof and St. Georg
Choose it for: Early ICE departures, the airport S1 in 25 minutes, the Lübeck train and the Kunsthalle, across the widest budget range
Check before booking: The station's south and east surroundings are the city's rough edge; St. Georg's Lange Reihe side is the pleasant part. Check the exact block before booking a cheap room.
Hamburg's economic authority reported 16.5 million overnight stays in 2025, up 2.1 percent, for the city-state; the statistics office counted 1,476,947 nights in June 2026 alone, up 1.3 percent. These are city demand figures, not Lübeck or the metropolitan region, and not a forecast of our bookings.
Booking decision
Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.
Hamburg's calendar moves prices more than its seasons. In 2026 the Winterdom runs on the Heiligengeistfeld from 6 November to 6 December and the Roncalli market on the Rathausmarkt from 23 November to 23 December, daily 11:00–21:00. In 2027 the Internorga fair is 12 to 16 March, the sold-out Haspa Marathon 25 April, the 838th Hafengeburtstag 6 to 9 May, and the Reeperbahn Festival (15 to 19 September) overlaps the Cruise Days (17 to 19 September) for the tightest weekend of the year.
Check the Hafengeburtstag 2027 dates and programme
Verify the event itself:
- Hamburger DOM: current funfair dates
- Rathausmarkt Christmas market 2026
- Reeperbahn Festival 2027
- Hamburg Cruise Days 2027
- Internorga 2027 at Hamburg Messe
Before choosing a room:
- Lay your dates over the event calendar first: Hafengeburtstag, the Marathon, the Reeperbahn Festival and the September Cruise Days move rates across every quarter, not only the nearest one.
- Decide whether the Hamburg CARD (Hamburg AB, from 12.90 euros) replaces single tickets for your days; the airport and the harbour ferries are inside the hvv network, Lübeck is a separate rail ticket.
- Check the exact street and station for station-side hotels, and the last S-Bahn back if you sleep in HafenCity or St. Pauli after a late concert.
Arrival
Make the first and last travel day easy.
By air: the S1 runs every 10 minutes from the station under the Airport Plaza, 25 minutes to the Hauptbahnhof. A single hvv ticket or the Hamburg CARD covers the ride within Hamburg AB.
By rail: Deutsche Bahn quotes a fastest 1 hour 47 minutes from Berlin with up to 29 direct trains a day. Lübeck is about 40 minutes from the Hauptbahnhof, every 30 minutes between 08:00 and 20:00 and hourly otherwise, which makes it a day trip from any central base.
Getting around: harbour ferries belong to the hvv, so a day ticket or the Hamburg CARD (from 12.90 euros, one to five consecutive days, valid until 06:00 after the last day) covers HADAG line 62 from Landungsbrücken bridge 3 as well as the S- and U-Bahn. Drivers find about 110 park-and-ride sites at rapid-transit stations in rings A to E.
Two-day plan
A visit that fits the hotel decision.
Arrival evening
Walk from the Rathausmarkt to the Jungfernstieg and along the Binnenalster. In Advent the Roncalli market runs here daily until 21:00 from 23 November to 23 December 2026.
Day one
Speicherstadt and HafenCity: book a Miniatur Wunderland time slot in advance, since the operator warns against spontaneous weekend visits, then the Elbphilharmonie Plaza (10:00–24:00), which needs a ticket with a 5-euro booking fee online or on site. Take HADAG ferry 62 from bridge 3 as the cheapest harbour cruise.
Day two
St. Pauli to Altona: the Sunday Fischmarkt opens at 07:00 from 15 November to 14 March and at 05:00 in summer, closing at 09:30; the Reeperbahn and the Sternschanze fill the evening.
Day three option
Lübeck by regional train in about 40 minutes: the Holstentor museum opens daily 10:00–18:00 and the Weihnachtsstadt runs from 23 November to 30 December 2026. A night there earns its place only for the Christmas markets or for Travemünde and the coast.
Common mistake
What to avoid.
Avoid treating the Elbphilharmonie Plaza as a free walk-up and Miniatur Wunderland as a drop-in: the Plaza ticket carries a booking fee and the Wunderland sells out at weekends. Avoid turning up at the Fischmarkt at 05:00 between mid-November and mid-March, when it opens at 07:00.
