City stay guide / Heidelberg
Where to stay in Heidelberg
Choose a Heidelberg hotel area for two nights: Altstadt, Bergheim, the Hauptbahnhof or Neuenheim, with castle tickets, funicular closures and arrival checked.
Quick answer
For two nights sleep in the Altstadt: the castle funicular at Kornmarkt, the Old Bridge, the Student Prison and the Christmas-market squares are all on foot, and the Heidelberg-Altstadt S-Bahn station sits at its eastern end. Choose Bergheim around Bismarckplatz when you want the same walk into the Hauptstraße with a tram hub at the door. Stay by the Hauptbahnhof or in the Bahnstadt for early ICE departures and day trips to Mannheim, Frankfurt or Stuttgart. Choose Neuenheim for the view side, the Philosophenweg and a quieter night across the Neckar. Heidelberg earns an overnight over a day trip when you want the castle after the coaches leave and the bridge after dark.
How long? Two nights for the castle, the Old Town and the Philosophenweg; a third for a Neckar boat day or a Mannheim excursion.
Where to stay
Choose the base by the day it must simplify.
Altstadt
Choose it for: Everything on foot: the Kornmarkt funicular to the castle, the Old Bridge, the Student Prison and the Christmas-market squares, with illumination nights watched from the street
Check before booking: Parking is the weak point: the Kornmarkt and Karlsplatz garages fill first on event days and the Altstadt closes to traffic for the Heidelberger Herbst and the illuminations. Check the walk from the Heidelberg-Altstadt S-Bahn station or Bismarckplatz to the hotel.
Bergheim / Bismarckplatz
Choose it for: The hinge between the Hauptbahnhof and the Old Town: Bismarckplatz is the tram and bus hub where trams from the station arrive and the Hauptstraße begins
Check before booking: You are just outside the historic core and Bismarckplatz is the first stop to be rerouted on event days; the city lists Bergheim among the districts to avoid by car on illumination nights. Check the exact street and the tram stop.
Hauptbahnhof / Bahnstadt
Choose it for: Early ICE departures, day trips (Mannheim from 10 minutes, Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof from an hour, Stuttgart from 44 minutes) and the new Bahnstadt quarter with the Europaplatz garage
Check before booking: Not the Old Town: Heidelberg Marketing puts the Altstadt about 10 minutes away by tram or bus. Check the tram line and the last service back after an evening in the Altstadt.
Neuenheim
Choose it for: The view side: the Philosophenweg and the Schlangenweg climb opposite the Altstadt, the Nepomuk terrace at the Old Bridge for illumination nights and a quieter north bank
Check before booking: You cross the Neckar for every Altstadt sight, there is no S-Bahn station in Neuenheim and the north-bank roads close to traffic on illumination evenings. The Schlangenweg is steep and not for pushchairs.
The Baden-Württemberg statistics office counted about 1,939,700 overnight stays in the city of Heidelberg in 2025, up 6.1 percent, in establishments with ten or more beds, the strongest growth among the state's large cities. That is city demand in a preliminary report, not a forecast of our bookings.
Booking decision
Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.
Three dates shape Heidelberg's calendar. The Christmas market runs across six Altstadt squares from 23 November to 22 December 2026, with the Kornmarkt Winter Woodland to 1 January and the Karlsplatz ice rink to 6 January 2027. The 2027 castle illuminations are published for 10 July and 4 September, evenings when the Alte Brücke and the north bank close to traffic. The Heidelberger Frühling music festival runs from 13 March to 17 April 2027. Castle tickets rise from 11 to 12 euros on 1 January 2027, and both funiculars stop from 4 October 2027 to 7 April 2028 for bridge works.
Check the Heidelberg Christmas market dates and squares
Verify the event itself:
- Heidelberg Marketing: castle illumination 2027 dates
- Schloss Heidelberg: visitor information and prices
- Heidelberger Bergbahnen: winter timetable from 2 November 2026
- Heidelberger Bergbahnen: prices from 1 January 2027
- Heidelberger Frühling 2027
Before choosing a room:
- Lay the dates over the Christmas market (23 November to 22 December 2026), the Heidelberger Frühling (13 March to 17 April 2027) and the illumination Saturdays (10 July and 4 September 2027) before comparing areas.
- Decide whether the HeidelbergCARD (25, 36 or 40 euros for one, two or four days) pays: it bundles the castle ticket with the lower funicular, the Student Prison combo and VRN regional transport, but not the ICE or the upper Königstuhl funicular.
- If the castle funicular matters, avoid 4 October 2027 to 7 April 2028, when both lines stop for bridge works and a replacement bus runs only as far as Molkenkur.
Arrival
Make the first and last travel day easy.
By rail: Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof is the only long-distance station, with ICE, IC and regional trains; the Altstadt is about 10 minutes away by tram or bus, and trams and buses from the station run directly to Bismarckplatz. The S-Bahn lines from Mannheim continue through the Hauptbahnhof to Heidelberg-Altstadt station at Am Karlstor on the east side of the Old Town. Deutsche Bahn's snapshot shows Mannheim from 10 minutes with up to 88 direct trains a day.
By air: Frankfurt Airport is about 80 kilometres away; Heidelberg Marketing says the train takes about 60 minutes with a change in Mannheim, and Deutsche Bahn's snapshot shows a fastest 52 minutes with up to three direct trains a day. The airport's regional station does not serve Heidelberg, so use the long-distance station.
By car: the A5 and A656 have direct exits for Heidelberg. The city runs 15 garages with about 5,000 spaces and a dynamic guidance system; the Altstadt garages at Kornmarkt (1.8-metre entry height) and Karlsplatz fill first, Europaplatz (162 spaces) sits at the Hauptbahnhof and Nordbrückenkopf (238 spaces) serves Neuenheim. The Altstadt closes to traffic during the Heidelberger Herbst and on illumination evenings.
Two-day plan
A visit that fits the hotel decision.
Arrival evening
Walk the Hauptstraße from Bismarckplatz to the Marktplatz and cross the Old Bridge for the view back at the castle. In Advent the market squares run until 21:00 on most days and 22:00 on Saturdays.
Day one
Take the funicular from Kornmarkt to the castle: the 11-euro ticket (12 euros from 2027) covers the courtyard, the Great Tun, the Pharmacy Museum and the ride to Molkenkur; interiors are by guided tour only, in English at 11:15, 12:15, 14:15 and 15:15 in winter. Continue on the historic upper funicular to the Königstuhl with the separate Panorama ticket, 17 euros return and 19 from 2027.
Day two
Climb the Schlangenweg from the Old Bridge to the Philosophenweg for the classic view, then the Student Prison (Monday to Saturday 10:30–16:00 in winter, timed tickets) and a 50-minute Neckar sightseeing boat from the Stadthalle pier while the season lasts.
Day three option
Mannheim in 10 minutes, or the Four Castles boat to Neckarsteinach, three hours from the Stadthalle pier with departures listed to 1 November 2026. The HeidelbergCARD covers RE, RB and S-Bahn trains in the VRN area, not the ICE.
Common mistake
What to avoid.
Avoid assuming the castle ticket or the HeidelbergCARD takes you to the Königstuhl summit: both end at Molkenkur, and the historic upper funicular needs the separate Panorama ticket. Avoid driving into the Altstadt on illumination evenings or during the Heidelberger Herbst, when the city closes the roads and the nearest garages fill early.
