Region base guide / Black Forest
Where to base in the Black Forest
Choose north or south first: Freiburg, Baden-Baden, Titisee or Triberg as a Black Forest base for walking, spa and the Feldberg, with KONUS and seasons checked.
Quick answer
Choose a half of the forest before a town. For the south by train, base in Freiburg: the city, the Schauinslandbahn and a half-hourly S-Bahn to Titisee and Neustadt give you a different mountain each day. Choose Titisee-Neustadt when the lake and the Feldberg are the point and you want the Hochschwarzwald Card's free cable-car ride. Choose Baden-Baden for thermal baths, the Merkur funicular and the northern valleys, accepting a bus from its out-of-town station. Triberg is the small-town middle for the waterfalls and the Schwarzwaldbahn in both directions.
How long? Three nights for one city or spa base plus two mountain days; four if you add a second valley or a lake day.
Where to stay
Choose the base by the days it must carry.
Freiburg im Breisgau
Choose it for: The southern city base by train: the Schauinslandbahn by tram and bus, a half-hourly S-Bahn to Titisee and Neustadt, and the Christmas market from 19 November 2026
Getting there: Freiburg Hauptbahnhof is the hub of the S1, S10 and S11 lines, and the hourly EuroAirport bus arrives at the bus station next to it.
Check before booking: It is a city with more than two million overnight stays a year, not a village; the Feldberg and the lakes are a train ride away and the northern forest is not a day trip. The old town is largely car-free, with 16 car parks and free park-and-ride on the edge.
Baden-Baden
Choose it for: Thermal baths, the Merkur funicular, the Festspielhaus and the northern valleys, with a direct hourly train to Triberg
Getting there: The station is at Ooser Bahnhofstraße in Oos, outside the centre: bus 201 runs every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 at weekends to the Stadtmitte.
Check before booking: Not walkable from the train, and from 30 July 2026 the 201 is split in two for about a year while the Luisenbrücke is rebuilt. The Feldberg side is a couple of regional trains away, so this is a northern base only.
Titisee-Neustadt
Choose it for: The lake and the Feldberg without a car: S-Bahn from Freiburg every 30 minutes, boats on the lake and the Hochschwarzwald Card with one free Feldbergbahn ride from two nights
Getting there: Titisee and Neustadt (Schwarzwald) stations on the S1, S10 and S11; the Feldberg lifts are reached on from Bärental.
Check before booking: Resort crowds at the lake in summer and at weekends; the boats stop around the end of October and the Feldbergbahn's winter 2026–27 timetable was unpublished at review. Check the walk from Titisee station to your hotel.
Triberg
Choose it for: Germany's highest waterfalls five minutes from the Marktplatz bus stop and the hourly Schwarzwaldbahn toward both Baden-Baden and Konstanz
Getting there: Triberg station on the Schwarzwaldbahn; buses 550, 7268 and 7270 climb to the Marktplatz, the stop for the waterfalls.
Check before booking: A small town with the station below the centre; in winter only the lower falls are open and the Christmas Magic no longer takes place. Choose it for the middle of the forest, not for nightlife.
Schwarzwald Tourismus reported about 23.4 million overnight stays in 2025 across the whole Black Forest holiday region, up 0.5 percent, in establishments with at least ten beds, in a release of 8 July 2026; Freiburg alone counted 2.13 million, down 1.9 percent. Those are regional and city demand figures, not a forecast of our bookings.
Booking decision
Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.
Mountain railways set the calendar. The Schauinslandbahn above Freiburg runs 09:00–17:00 all year but closes for revision from 16 November to 4 December 2026 and from 15 February to 19 March 2027; the Feldbergbahn's winter 2026–27 dates were not yet published at review, and the Titisee boats stop around the end of October. Freiburg's Christmas market runs from 19 November to 23 December 2026 with 22 November closed; Baden-Baden's Festspielhaus Easter Festival is 20 to 29 March 2027. Triberg's Christmas Magic has ended, so do not book late December for it.
Check Schauinslandbahn operating times and revision closures
Verify the season and the dates:
- Feldbergbahn: current opening hours and seasons
- Freiburg Christmas Market 2026: dates and hours
- Triberg Waterfalls: hours, winter access and prices
- Baden-Baden: bus changes from 30 July 2026
- Festspielhaus Baden-Baden: Easter Festival 2027
Before choosing a room:
- Choose the half first: a Baden-Baden hotel and a Feldberg day do not fit three nights without a car, and even by train the two halves meet only at Offenburg.
- Ask whether the host issues KONUS and, around Titisee, the Hochschwarzwald Card; both change the daily budget but neither covers the arrival journey.
- Check the mountain railway you came for: the Schauinslandbahn's revision closures, the Feldbergbahn's unpublished winter dates and the end of the Titisee boat season all fall between November and March.
Arrival
Arrive, then move between the bases.
By rail from the south and west: EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse has an hourly bus to Freiburg's bus station, about 60 minutes, and a bus every 7 to 10 minutes to Basel SBB for trains on. From Freiburg the Breisgau-S-Bahn lines S1, S10 and S11 together give a 30-minute frequency to Titisee and Neustadt. Official journey times are not printed on the operator pages, so check the DB planner.
By rail from the north: the Schwarzwaldbahn Regional-Express runs hourly all day between Karlsruhe and Konstanz, calling at Baden-Baden, Offenburg and Triberg. Freiburg is not on it; to combine the two halves you change at Offenburg, which is why this guide treats north and south as separate bases.
By car: Triberg sits at the junction of the B33 and B500, with the A5 about 50 kilometres away at Offenburg. Freiburg's centre is largely car-free with free park-and-ride on the edge; Baden-Baden's Oos Nord park-and-ride beside the station is free, and the parking ticket at the paid sites includes the bus to the centre. In snow check VerkehrsInfo BW for the high road.
Without a car
Pick Freiburg or Titisee-Neustadt in the south, or Baden-Baden in the north, and let KONUS carry the buses and regional trains. KONUS is second-class local transport only: ICE, IC and EC trains and all mountain railways are excluded, and it is not valid for your arrival journey, only from check-in to departure.
With a car
A car buys the valleys between the lines, the B500 high road in good weather and early starts at the Feldberg car parks. It does not help in Freiburg's car-free centre, and the Nationalpark Schwarzwald closes some trails from 27 December to 15 March and does not grit its experience trails in ice and snow.
A base-by-base plan
Days that fit the base you chose.
Day one: Schauinsland
From Freiburg take tram 2 to Günterstal and bus 21 to the valley station, about 20 minutes from the Bertoldsbrunnen. The cable car runs 09:00–17:00, 15 euros return or 13 with KONUS, and closes from 16 November to 4 December 2026.
Day two: Feldberg and Titisee
S-Bahn to Titisee for a lake round trip (April to about the end of October, 10:00–18:00), then on toward Bärental for the Feldbergbahn, which runs from 1 May in summer; the Hochschwarzwald Card gives one free ride including the tower from two nights at participating hosts.
Day three: Triberg waterfalls
Schwarzwaldbahn to Triberg and bus to the Marktplatz: the falls drop 163 metres, open daily and are lit until 22:00; in winter only the lower section from the main ticket office is cleared, 7 euros.
Day four: Baden-Baden baths
Bus 201 from the station to the Stadtmitte, then Caracalla (08:00–22:00, 21 euros for two hours) or the Friedrichsbad (09:00–22:00, 39 euros), both closed on 24 and 25 December, and the Merkur funicular daily 10:00–22:00 for 8.50 euros return, apart from its January revision.
Local ticket
KONUS rides the buses and local trains; the mountains cost extra.
Hosts in about 150 Black Forest holiday towns issue the KONUS guest card with the visitor's tax at check-in. It gives free second-class travel on local buses and trains across nine transport associations, including the trams of Freiburg and Karlsruhe, from check-in until the day of departure.
It excludes ICE, IC, EC and ECE trains and every mountain railway: the Schauinslandbahn still charges KONUS holders 13 euros return. The separate Hochschwarzwald Card, for stays of two nights or more at participating hosts around Titisee and the Feldberg, adds one free Feldbergbahn ride and one free lake boat trip.
Common mistake
What to avoid.
Avoid treating the Black Forest as one place to sleep: Baden-Baden and the Feldberg are different trips. Avoid expecting KONUS to cover the Schauinslandbahn, the Feldbergbahn or an ICE, and avoid booking Triberg in late December for a Christmas Magic that no longer takes place.
