Region base guide / Harz
Where to base in the Harz
Choose a Harz base for the Brocken railway and half-timbered towns: Wernigerode, Quedlinburg, Goslar or Braunlage, with HATIX and winter timetables checked.
Quick answer
For three or four nights with the Brocken as the goal, base in Wernigerode: the Brockenbahn's through trains to the summit leave from the town's own narrow-gauge station beside the main station, the castle stays open all winter and your host issues the HATIX bus ticket. Choose Quedlinburg for the UNESCO old town and the Advent courtyards, accepting the longest route to the Brocken. Choose Goslar on the Lower Saxony side for the Rammelsberg mine and the Kaiserpfalz, knowing the steam trains start on the other side of the mountain. Braunlage is the ski and Walpurgis base for drivers, with the Wurmberg cable car at the door and no railway.
How long? Three nights for the Brocken day, one old town and the castle or the mine; four to add the second UNESCO town or a Walpurgis night.
Where to stay
Choose the base by the days it must carry.
Wernigerode
Choose it for: The Brockenbahn base: through trains to the summit leave the town's narrow-gauge station, the castle is open all winter and the Christmas market opens on 20 November 2026
Getting there: Regional trains from Magdeburg and Halle via Halberstadt; the DB station, the HSB station and the bus station adjoin, the old town is about 20 minutes on foot from them, and a free park-and-ride sits behind the station.
Check before booking: The 65-euro Brocken return costs the same from every HSB station, so the advantage is time, not money. Check the walk or bus from the station to the old town and the castle's November filming closures on 6 and 9 November 2026.
Quedlinburg
Choose it for: The UNESCO old town with the Stiftskirche and its treasury, the Advent courtyards and the start of the Selketalbahn steam line
Getting there: Hourly regional trains from Magdeburg or Halle and a direct Harz-Berlin-Express from Berlin at weekends and holidays; the town centre is a stopping ban for cars, with parking around the ring.
Check before booking: The farthest base from the Brocken: by steam train it means the long Selketal route, by car a drive to Schierke or Drei Annen Hohne. The Stiftskirche closes on Mondays.
Goslar
Choose it for: The Lower Saxony UNESCO base: the Rammelsberg mine open daily all year, the Kaiserpfalz and the longest Christmas market, 25 November to 30 December 2026, with the Weihnachtswald
Getting there: Regional trains from Hannover and Braunschweig; the RB 82, RB 43 and RE 10 around Goslar joined the HATIX+ rail add-on in 2026.
Check before booking: No narrow-gauge station: the Brockenbahn starts on the Saxony-Anhalt side, and the walking alternative is the Goetheweg from Torfhaus, about 9 kilometres and 360 metres of climb one way. Check the bus link to Torfhaus before relying on it.
Braunlage
Choose it for: The mountain base for drivers: the Wurmberg cable car and northern Germany's largest ski area at the door, and one of the six main Walpurgis towns
Getting there: No railway: Bad Harzburg is the nearest rail arrival named by Deutsche Bahn, and the bus link could not be verified for this review, so plan on a car.
Check before booking: The cable car closes in bad weather and its winter 2026–27 opening date was unpublished at review; roadworks on the B27 and B4 were posted for autumn 2026. Check the lift status and the road before booking a ski week.
The Saxony-Anhalt statistics office counted 2,949,615 overnight stays in the Harz und Harzvorland region in 2025, down 1.9 percent, in establishments with ten or more beds plus campsites. The Lower Saxony half is reported separately and its 2025 regional figure was not available at review, so no single Harz total exists, and none of this forecasts our bookings.
Booking decision
Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.
Timetables matter more than events. The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen winter timetable runs from 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027, with the last train down from the Brocken at 17:07 and online tickets bookable three to four weeks ahead; the summer 2027 timetable was not yet published at review. The Brocken return costs 65 euros per adult from any HSB station. Christmas markets fill the towns from 20 November 2026 in Wernigerode and 25 November in Goslar (to 30 December), with Quedlinburg's Advent in den Höfen on the weekends of 28–29 November, 5–6 and 12–13 December. Walpurgis Night on 30 April 2027 fills Thale, Schierke and Braunlage.

Before choosing a room:
- Decide which side of the mountain the trip belongs to: the steam trains start in Saxony-Anhalt (Wernigerode, Schierke, Quedlinburg), the mine and the Kaiserpfalz are in Lower Saxony (Goslar), and only a car joins them comfortably in a day.
- Book the Brocken train before the hotel in Advent and at Walpurgis: online tickets open only three to four weeks ahead, the return costs 65 euros per adult and the winter timetable's last descent is at 17:07.
- Ask whether the host issues HATIX, and check the walk from the station to the old town in Wernigerode (about 20 minutes) and the bus for Braunlage, which has no railway.
Arrival
Arrive, then move between the bases.
By rail: Deutsche Bahn's advice is ICE or IC to Hannover, Braunschweig, Magdeburg, Halle, Erfurt or Göttingen, then regional trains to Goslar, Bad Harzburg, Halberstadt and Wernigerode. Quedlinburg's tourist office names hourly Abellio trains from Magdeburg or Halle and the weekend Harz-Berlin-Express. Line numbers on the Saxony-Anhalt side could not be verified from official pages at review, so check the planner for your date.
By steam: the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen link Wernigerode, Drei Annen Hohne, Schierke and the Brocken on line 325, with the Selketalbahn from Quedlinburg joining the network further south. In the winter timetable the through trains leave Wernigerode at 09:25, 10:25, 11:25 and 15:05 and reach the summit in about 1 hour 40; Schierke is 50 minutes from Wernigerode.
By car: the A36 serves the northern Harz from the west and the A14 from Magdeburg and Halle; Wernigerode's Feldstraße park-and-ride behind the station is free and Quedlinburg's centre is a no-stopping zone. The national park warns against entering the forests during and for some days after storms, and dead spruce is felled only along roads, visitor sites and the Brockenbahn line.
Without a car
Base in Wernigerode and let HATIX carry the buses: the ticket comes with the guest contribution at participating hosts in all four bases and covers public buses in the Harz, Goslar, Göttingen and Mansfeld-Südharz districts, with a small HATIX+ day add-on for the regional trains around Goslar and the South Harz. It is never valid on the narrow-gauge trains, so budget 65 euros per adult for the Brocken.
With a car
A car joins the two sides of the mountain in a day: Goslar's mine in the morning, Wernigerode's castle in the afternoon, Schierke for the shortest Brocken walk, about 5 kilometres and 500 metres of climb through the Eckerloch. Park in the base towns, not at the summit, and expect Walpurgis and Advent weekends to fill the car parks.
A base-by-base plan
Days that fit the base you chose.
Day one: the Brocken
Take the Brockenbahn from Wernigerode or Schierke to the summit: the Brockenhaus visitor centre opens daily 09:30–17:00 all year, the 1.6-kilometre summit loop is signposted and a ranger walk leaves at 12:15; the Brockengarten is closed in winter. Be on the 17:07 train down, the last in the winter timetable.
Day two: Wernigerode
Schloss Wernigerode is open through the winter on a Tuesday-to-Sunday pattern, daily from 21 December to 6 January, closed on 24 December, 9 euros. Walk the half-timbered Marktplatz and, from 20 November 2026, the Christmas market, which rests on 22 November.
Day three: Quedlinburg
The Stiftskirche St. Servatii and the Domschatz open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–17:00 for 8 euros; on the Advent weekends more than 20 historic courtyards open for Advent in den Höfen. A direct Berlin train runs at weekends if the trip ends here.
Day four option: Goslar
The Rammelsberg world-heritage mine opens daily 09:00–17:00 from November to March (closed 24 and 31 December) and the Kaiserpfalz Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–17:00 for 7.50 euros; from 25 November to 30 December 2026 the market and the Weihnachtswald run until 22:00.
Local ticket
HATIX rides the buses, not the Brockenbahn.
Pay the guest contribution in a participating town and your host hands you the HATIX guest card for the whole stay and everyone on the registration form. It covers public buses in the districts of Harz, Goslar, Göttingen and Mansfeld-Südharz, on selected routes in the last two, and bicycles when there is room. Wernigerode, Quedlinburg, Goslar and Braunlage all participate.
A HATIX+ day add-on for 3 euros (1.50 for each further person) opens the regional trains RB 80/81 and RB 46 in the South Harz and, since 1 January 2026, the RB 82, RB 43 and RE 10 around Goslar and Bad Harzburg. The card is never valid on the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, and neither is the Deutschlandticket between Drei Annen Hohne and the Brocken.
Common mistake
What to avoid.
Avoid expecting HATIX or the Deutschlandticket to carry you up the Brocken: the narrow-gauge railway is excluded and the return fare is 65 euros per adult. Avoid booking Braunlage or Goslar for a steam-train week without a car, and avoid relying on the Wurmberg cable car in bad weather or before its winter opening date is published.
