Region base guide / Middle Rhine

Where to base on the Middle Rhine

Choose a Middle Rhine base for castles, the Loreley and boats: Koblenz, Boppard, Bacharach or Rüdesheim, with the 2026 rail closure and ferry rules checked.

Quick answer

For two or three nights by train in 2026, base on the left bank: Boppard if you want the free VRM guest ticket, the chairlift and boat departures in the middle of the valley; Koblenz if you need the rail hub, Ehrenbreitstein and city evenings. Choose Bacharach for the half-timbered castle village and a quieter night. Treat Rüdesheim as a wine-town base for drivers until the right-bank railway reopens on 12 December 2026.

How long? Two nights for Marksburg, the Loreley and one boat leg; three to add Rheinfels, Ehrenbreitstein and a wine evening.

Where to stay

Choose the base by the days it must carry.

Koblenz

Choose it for: The rail hub where both banks' lines normally meet, Ehrenbreitstein with the Seilbahn, KD liners toward Mainz and the seven-square Christmas market

Getting there: Koblenz Hauptbahnhof on the left-bank line; regional trains reach Bingen in 39 to 49 minutes.

Check before booking: Koblenz is the northern end of the World Heritage stretch, so the Loreley and Bacharach are a train or boat ride away each day. Parking is scarce, with 13 city car parks and dynamic guidance, and the Seilbahn pauses from 2 to 18 November 2026.

Boppard

Choose it for: The mid-valley base: the Bopparder GästeKarte gives free VRM buses and trains, the Sesselbahn climbs to the Vierseenblick, and KD and Loreley-Linie boats leave from the promenade

Getting there: Boppard Hauptbahnhof on the open left-bank line; the Boppard–Filsen car ferry crosses 06:30–21:00.

Check before booking: The chairlift closes at the end of October and, in the 2026 low water, the Loreley-Linie runs only a round trip from Boppard rather than to the Loreley. Check the boat and lift status for your dates.

Bacharach

Choose it for: A half-timbered village under Burg Stahleck for slow evenings, boat landings and the Kaub ferry to the right bank

Getting there: On the left-bank line between Bingen and Koblenz, inside the RNN fare area rather than VRM.

Check before booking: It is the smallest base: a VRM guest ticket from a Koblenz-side host does not cover RNN fares here, and the Kaub ferry accepts VRM tickets but not the guest ticket. Check the walk from the station and the last train back.

Rüdesheim am Rhein

Choose it for: Rheingau wine town with the Niederwald cable car, the Christmas Market of Nations and the start of KD's winter Loreley trip

Getting there: Right bank, in the Hessian RMV fare area; no trains at all until 12 December 2026, so arrive via Bingen with bus 234 or the ferry, or by replacement bus from Wiesbaden.

Check before booking: Until the railway reopens every rail arrival ends with a ferry or bus; the Assmannshausen chairlift is out of order in 2026 and the Niederwald cable car pauses from 2 to 18 November before the market season. A car makes this base far easier.

The Rhineland-Palatinate statistics office counted 2,582,238 overnight stays in the Mittelrheintal tourism region in 2025, up 0.9 percent, in a preliminary release of 6 March 2026. The region was re-cut in 2024, excludes the Hessian bank around Rüdesheim and says nothing about our bookings.

Booking decision

Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.

Three things set 2026–27 prices and feasibility here. Deutsche Bahn's right-bank corridor works close the Koblenz–St. Goarshausen–Rüdesheim–Wiesbaden line from 10 July to 12 December 2026, with replacement buses that do not carry bicycles. KD's scheduled liners run from 4 April to 18 October 2026, then only the winter Loreley trip from Rüdesheim between 19 October 2026 and 2 April 2027, which sails with a minimum passenger number; low water has already thinned the 2026 timetable. Koblenz's Christmas market runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 and Rüdesheim's from 19 November to 23 December 2026, and Rhein in Flammen 2027 is already published for Bingen/Rüdesheim on 3 July and Spay/Koblenz on 14 August.

Check the right-bank railway works (Deutsche Bahn)

Verify the season and the dates:

Before choosing a room:

  • Decide the bank first: in 2026 a right-bank address in Rüdesheim, St. Goarshausen or Braubach means no train until 12 December. Enter real dates and compare the same nights on the left bank.
  • Ask the host whether the VRM guest ticket or the Bopparder GästeKarte is included; it changes the daily budget for Koblenz, Boppard and St. Goar but not for Bacharach or Rüdesheim.
  • Check boat and lift status for your week: the KD liner season ends on 18 October 2026, the Boppard chairlift closes at the end of October, and both cable cars pause from 2 to 18 November 2026 before the Christmas markets.

Arrival

Arrive, then move between the bases.

By rail from Frankfurt: Rüdesheim's own advice during the closure is RE 2 from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to Bingen in about an hour, then bus 234 or the Bingen–Rüdesheim ferry. For Koblenz, Boppard and Bacharach use the left-bank line, which stays open throughout 2026; official end-to-end times from Frankfurt Airport are not published on one page, so check the DB planner.

Across the river: the Romantic Rhine tourism board notes that bridges are sparse and concentrated around Koblenz, so the valley crosses by ferry: St. Goar–St. Goarshausen on weekdays 05:30–21:00, Saturdays from 06:20 and Sundays from 07:20; Boppard–Filsen 06:30–21:00; and Kaub for Bacharach and Oberwesel. Pay each crossing; the Deutschlandticket is not valid on the Loreley ferry.

By car: the B42 between St. Goarshausen and Kaub is fully closed from 28 September 2026 for rock-securing works, and the Loreley's stepped Wandersteig is shut; the plateau and the Mythoshalle remain reachable. Low water in 2026 limits the St. Goar ferry to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

Without a car

Sleep on the left bank. Boppard or St. Goar hosts hand you the VRM guest ticket for buses and trains between Remagen and Oberwesel or Kaub; Bacharach is RNN and Rüdesheim RMV, so the ticket stops at the fare border. Build the Loreley day around a ferry crossing paid in cash or by card and the last train back.

With a car

A car reopens the right bank in 2026: Marksburg at Braubach, St. Goarshausen and Rüdesheim's Niederwald cable car all become simple. You still queue for ferries, pay 25 euros a day to park at Ehrenbreitstein and lose the B42 between St. Goarshausen and Kaub during the rock works, so park at the base and ride the boat where it runs.

IV

A base-by-base plan

Days that fit the base you chose.

Day one: Marksburg and Braubach

The only never-destroyed hill castle on the Rhine is visited by guided tour only: 10:00–17:00 until 1 November 2026, 11:00–16:00 in winter with English tours at weekends, adults 12 euros. Braubach is on the closed right bank in 2026, so go by car, by ferry from the left bank or by KD boat in season.

Day two: Loreley and the ferries

From Boppard or St. Goar cross to St. Goarshausen and reach the Loreley plateau by the shuttle bus; the Mythoshalle stays open while the Wandersteig and parts of the park are closed for rock securing. Return by ferry before 21:00 and add Burg Rheinfels above St. Goar, daily 10:00–18:00 in season for 6 euros.

Day three: Koblenz

Ride the Seilbahn to Festung Ehrenbreitstein on the combined ticket of 21.90 euros, then walk the Deutsches Eck. Apart from 2–18 November 2026 the cable car also runs on Advent and winter days until 10 January 2027; in December add the seven-square Christmas market.

Boat leg

In season a KD liner between Koblenz and Mainz replaces one train leg, from 4 April to 18 October 2026. From 19 October 2026 to 2 April 2027 the only scheduled option is KD's Rüdesheim–St. Goarshausen winter trip, which sails only with a minimum number of passengers.

V

Local ticket

The VRM guest ticket covers the left bank's trains, not the ferries.

Hosts in the VRM area, which reaches from Remagen to Oberwesel and Kaub and includes Koblenz, Boppard and St. Goar, issue a free VRM guest ticket for the length of your stay. Boppard adds its own GästeKarte with the town museum free and discounts on the Sesselbahn, KD and the Loreley-Linie.

VRM's own list of ferries that accept its tickets names only Linz–Kripp, Remagen–Erpel and Kaub, and at Kaub the guest ticket is excluded. Bacharach sits in the RNN area and Rüdesheim in the Hessian RMV area, so neither is covered. No region-wide paid card exists.

VI

Common mistake

What to avoid.

Avoid assuming the guest ticket or a Deutschlandticket gets you across the river: pay for every ferry. Avoid booking Rüdesheim for a rail trip before 12 December 2026, and avoid planning the Loreley's stepped Wandersteig while the rock-securing closure stands.
