Region base guide / Moselle

Where to base on the Moselle

Choose a Moselle base for wine villages, castles and boats: Cochem, Bernkastel-Kues, Trier or Traben-Trarbach, with the guest ticket and seasons checked.

Quick answer

For three or four nights by train, base in Cochem: both regional lines stop there, the Reichsburg and the chairlift are a walk from the station, and the Beilstein boats leave from the promenade in season. Choose Bernkastel-Kues with a car, or if you accept a train-plus-bus arrival via Wittlich, for the half-timbered Middle Moselle and its wine festival. Choose Trier when Roman monuments and year-round city life matter more than sleeping among vines. Traben-Trarbach is the quieter art nouveau alternative at the end of a branch line.

How long? Three nights for Cochem, one wine village and a boat; four to add Trier's Roman sites or the Calmont climb.

Where to stay

Choose the base by the days it must carry.

Cochem

Choose it for: Train-based stays: both regional lines stop here, the Reichsburg and the chairlift are a walk away and the Beilstein boats leave from the promenade in season

Getting there: Cochem (Mosel) station on the RE 1 and RB 81; the castle is a 15-to-30-minute walk uphill, with a shuttle from May to the end of October and no car access to the castle itself.

Check before booking: It is the busiest Moselle town. Cochem is in the VRM fare area, so a Cochem host issues the VRM version of the guest ticket; check the walk from the station to your hotel and the castle tour times, which are shorter from 2 November.

Bernkastel-Kues

Choose it for: A car-based wine-village stay on the Middle Moselle: half-timbered Bernkastel, Burg Landshut above the town and the wine festival in early September

Getting there: No railway station: the transport association's own advice is a train to Wittlich Hauptbahnhof and bus 301 to the Forum stop on the Kues side.

Check before booking: Without a car every day starts with a bus. The Weinfest der Mittelmosel (2 to 6 September 2027) and the Advent weekends fill the town, and the Burg Landshut restaurant opens daily only from late March to the end of October.

Trier

Choose it for: Roman monuments open all year, direct trains to Luxembourg and Saarbrücken, the largest hotel stock and the Christmas market on the Hauptmarkt

Getting there: Trier Hauptbahnhof is the western end of the Moselle line; RE 1 trains reach Cochem in about 45 minutes according to the 2026 timetable.

Check before booking: Trier is a city at the far end of the valley, not a wine village: Cochem is a 45-minute ride and Bernkastel needs train and bus. The Porta Nigra is partly scaffolded for restoration and part of the Kaiserthermen is closed.

Traben-Trarbach

Choose it for: The art nouveau wine town: quieter nights, Kolb boats to Bernkastel from April to October and the underground Christmas market on Advent weekends

Getting there: End of the branch line from Bullay, where you change from the RE 1 or RB 81; the junction is in the VRM area while the town itself is VRT.

Check before booking: A branch-line shuttle sets your evenings, and the branch's official timetable was not available to check for this review; confirm the last train from Bullay and the walk from the station before booking.

The Rhineland-Palatinate statistics office counted 5,647,702 overnight stays in the Mosel-Saar tourism region in 2025, up 2.6 percent, in a preliminary release of 6 March 2026; the first half of 2026 added 2,331,571 nights, up 0.2 percent. The region includes the Saar and Ruwer valleys and campsites, so it is wider than the Moselle towns and says nothing about our bookings.

Booking decision

Keep the chosen area in the hotel search.

The valley has two seasons. Kolb's Cochem–Beilstein boats ran daily from 1 May to 31 October 2026 and list only New Year round trips in winter; the Reichsburg's main season ends on 1 November 2026, after which tours run 10:00–15:00, and on Wednesdays and weekends only from 11 January to 12 February 2027; the Cochem chairlift's published hours end on 15 November 2026. Christmas markets fill the towns from 20 November 2026 in Trier and Bernkastel and from 27 November in Cochem, and Traben-Trarbach's underground wine market runs on weekends from 20 November 2026 to 2 January 2027. The next Weinfest der Mittelmosel in Bernkastel-Kues is 2 to 6 September 2027.

Check Reichsburg Cochem opening hours and seasons

Verify the season and the dates:

Before choosing a room:

  • Decide train or car before the town: Bernkastel-Kues has no station, Traben-Trarbach sits at the end of a branch line, and Cochem and Trier are the only bases with roughly two trains an hour.
  • Ask the host whether the public-transport guest ticket is included; it is free but only participating accommodation issues it, and the VRT and VRM versions reach different places.
  • Compare the same dates against the season: boats stop after October, the Reichsburg runs short winter tours, and the September wine festival and the Advent weekends raise rates in Bernkastel and Cochem.
III

Arrival

Arrive, then move between the bases.

By rail: Koblenz and Trier are the two ends of the Moselle line. The 2026 VRM timetable shows the RE 1 (Mannheim–Saarbrücken–Trier–Koblenz) and the RB 81 (Trier–Koblenz) each roughly hourly, together about two trains an hour through Wittlich, Bullay and Cochem; only the RB 81 stops at Ediger-Eller for the Calmont. The booklet warns that regional trains generally do not wait for late connections at Trier, Bullay or Koblenz.

By air: Mosellandtouristik names Frankfurt-Hahn, Cologne/Bonn and Luxembourg as the gateways, with onward travel by hire car, train or taxi; it does not name Frankfurt Main, and Hahn's current flight programme could not be verified for this review. Check the airport before assuming a direct link.

By car: the valley road follows the river, which makes Bernkastel-Kues and the villages between Zell and Trier practical. The Reichsburg has no car access: park in the Endertstraße garage or the Pinnerstraße car park and walk up or take the May-to-October shuttle.

Without a car

Base in Cochem or Trier and let the guest ticket carry the days: at participating hosts it covers second-class regional trains and buses across the VRT area, with rail to Cochem, Perl and Luxembourg and bus 700 to Cochem and 720 to Bullay. Koblenz is not listed, so budget a normal fare for a Koblenz day.

With a car

A car opens Bernkastel-Kues, Beilstein and the villages without bus timetables, and reaches the Calmont trailheads at Bremm or Eller directly. Park below the Reichsburg, not at it, and expect the wine-festival and Advent weekends to fill town car parks.

IV

A base-by-base plan

Days that fit the base you chose.

Day one: Cochem and the Reichsburg

Walk up to the castle for a guided tour, the only way inside: daily 09:30–17:00 until 1 November 2026, 10:00–15:00 in winter. Ride the chairlift to the Pinner Kreuz viewpoint while its 2026 hours last, until 15 November, for 7.90 euros return.

Day two: boats and Beilstein

In season take Kolb's half-day boat from Cochem to Beilstein, daily from 1 May to 31 October; after that, ride the RB 81 two stops to Ediger-Eller instead and walk the lower Calmont paths. The via ferrata itself is a four-to-five-hour circuit on ropes and ladders for sure-footed walkers only.

Day three: Trier's Roman city

Porta Nigra and the Kaiserthermen open daily, 09:00–16:00 from November to February and until 18:00 from April to September, 6 euros each; the Antikencard covers both. The Porta Nigra is partly scaffolded and the Kaiserthermen's southern caldarium section is closed.

Day four: the Middle Moselle

Bus 301 from Wittlich or your car to Bernkastel-Kues: the half-timbered market square, Burg Landshut above the town and, from April to October, Kolb's boat on to Traben-Trarbach for the art nouveau waterfront.

V

Local ticket

The guest ticket comes from your host, not the ticket office.

Participating hotels, holiday flats, guesthouses and wineries hand over a free public-transport guest ticket at check-in, valid from arrival to departure day on second-class regional trains and buses. Trier, Bernkastel-Kues and Traben-Trarbach hosts issue the VRT version, which also covers rail to Cochem, Perl and Luxembourg and bus 700 to Cochem; Cochem hosts issue the VRM version.

The ticket cannot be bought, is non-transferable and needs photo ID. Koblenz is not among the places the VRT version lists, and long-distance trains are not regional transport, so check the host's participation before choosing a base on the strength of it.

Read the guest ticket terms (Mosellandtouristik)

VI

Common mistake

What to avoid.

Avoid booking Bernkastel-Kues for a rail trip: the town has no station, and the official route is train to Wittlich and bus 301. Avoid planning a Moselle boat day between November and April, when Kolb lists only New Year round trips, and avoid assuming the guest ticket reaches Koblenz.
